1. No shooting can take place unless at least two members are present. The Keyholder will be in charge of the whole range, Detail Range Officer(s) (DRO) are chosen as needed.
2. Before shooting starts, the Keyholder will check the fire door is securely closed, the ballistic curtain, sacrificial target plates and extraction fans are working, the range shooting area is safe to use and check for any new hits to overhead / side baffles. Any new hits found, and their location will be noted on the attendance signing in sheet being used for that shoot, alongside the Keyholder’s name. Metal targets are strictly forbidden, any necessary metal equipment, e.g. turning targets, must be protected by appropriate wooden baffles.
3. No firearm will be taken into the main club room except to enter or immediately exit the range. Members are responsible for ensuring that ALL firearms entering the range go ONLY into the racking provided in the lobby & range shooting area or the armoury “fumble zone” before use. ALL firearms, when unpacked, will have actions open with a breech flag in the chamber as appropriate, revolver cylinders will be open, and others seen to be safe.
4. When moving any firearm, its muzzle will be pointed upwards or downwards as appropriate and NEVER towards people or where people could suddenly appear.
5. The DRO is responsible for safety during the firing detail for which he/she is chosen.
6. The DRO decides who will be allowed in the range shooting area during a detail with no entry once the detail starts. Probationary shooters will be accompanied by a full member.
7. All people in the range shooting area are responsible for using appropriate hearing protection while shooting is taking place.
8. All ammunition will comply with the detail on the Range Limits notice on the range door. If necessary, the DRO’s decision on ammunition suitability for a detail will prevail.
9. There will be no shooting less than 10 metres from the target area for safety reasons.
10. When shooting takes place forward of the 25-metre firing point(s), all other firearms in the range shooting area will be made safe and stored in the range shooting area racking.
11. Firearms for the next detail should be put safely in the range shooting area racking.
12. With the flap down if shooting from 25 metres, the door closed and no-one forward of the firing point, the DRO will call for firearms to be moved to the firing points. While loading, shooting or unloading, firearms will be pointed towards the target area.
13. No shooter will load and/or start shooting until instructed to do so by the DRO.
14. The command ‘STOP, STOP, STOP’ to stop firing will be obeyed immediately.
15. Any shooter experiencing malfunctions or misfires will notify the DRO unless immediately corrected. The DRO will deal with any complete misfired rounds.
16. At a detail’s completion, all firearms will be made safe with the action open and the chamber(s) empty for checking by the shooter (or accompanying member) AND THEN AGAIN by the DRO (or another full member called in by the bell) before a breech flag is inserted (if practical) and the firearm is returned to the range shooting area racking.
17. Nobody will be allowed to go forward of the firing point(s) or leave the range shooting area until range order 16 has been completed in full.
18. Any breech mechanisms will be released safely down range or as agreed by the Keyholder.
19. Any incidents thought to need further investigation or ideas for improved safety procedures should be notified to the HR&PC Secretary without delay please.
